Wondering about some of our favorites? Here is a little more info for the skin junkies in all of us.
Tamanu. Tamanu oil is cold pressed from the nut of Calophyllum inophyllum. This oil isalso known as Foraha or simply Calophyllum. Tamanu Oil is considered to be one of the most active of all plant oils. Well known for it's healing and nourishing activity, this is one of the best choices for irritated skin conditions and both blemishes and aging. It's unique composition speeds new cell growth making it ideal scarred and damaged skin.
Pracaxi. Pracaxi Oil comes from a tree only known as "oil tree". It contains a saturated fatty acid that while poorly absorbed ingested is protective when used externally. Pracaxi oil helps to even the skin tone, reducing the appearance of melasma, age spots, sun spots, hyperpigmentation and scars and stretch marks. It is also displays strong antibacterial properties.
Acai. Acai Berry is a superfood and its extract is rich in anti-oxidants. Its special anthocyanins support cellular protection (against the invasion of free radicals) -- so think slowing or reversing aging. These dark purple berries are actually one of the planet's highest sources of antioxidants. And they have flavanols, vitamins B1, B2, B3, E, C, calcium, potassium, oleic and linoleic acid -- it's no wonder they have long been prized by the South American native population.
Buriti. Buriti oil is naturally rich in beta-carotene (5 times more than carrot oil!) -- a powerful antioxidant that is known for cell renewal and skin elasticity, both great for anti-aging. It’s rich unsaturated fatty acids also helps to rebuild and moisturize skin cells. Buriti means "tree of life" in Brazil and it is no wonder given the ability to prevent and repair sun damage exposure, protect against free radical damage and restore moisture in the skin cells.
Cupuacu. Cupuacu is a close cousin to our friend the cacao plant, but it has richer pulp and the butter is softer. With a great capacity for water absorption and the ability to prevent moisture evaporation from the skin, it can restore the natural humidity and elasticity to skin (and hair!). It also contains phytosterols (which act like free radical scavengers), essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6), vitamins C & A and phosphorus.
Murumuru. Murumuru butter, besides being fun to say, is a fantastic emollient that absorbs quickly into the deeper layers of the skin and helps to retain moisture in the skin and hair, keeping you hydrated. It is also high in antioxidants, is anti-bacterial and is anti-allergenic. This butter goes the extra mile in moisturizing but due to its other properties is extremely gentle on the skin.
Bacuri. Bacuri butter comes from a local Brazilian fruit with a rich pulp. It has an intense scent and dark color which belies its use as a remedy for many skin ailments such as the reduction of the appearance of blemishes and scarring and to ease for eczema. It is rich in fatty acids and contains Lysine and Methionine which is good for collagen and elastin production as well as the process that promotes healthy hair, skin and nail growth.
And what about some of our signature actives? Our favorite ingredients born in a lab (yes, sometimes these are equally important for beautiful results).
Argireline. Argireline is a name of a specific peptide, which contributes to collagen and elastin. It is claimed to have many different wrinkle-fighting and anti-aging benefits and is often termed as the closest product to Botox you can get without an injection. It prevents muscle movement (which contributes to wrinkle formation) and promotes and optimizes collagen resulting in reduction of fine lines and improvement in moisture.
Matrixyl. Matrixyl is a type of peptide (our Chemist's favorite one, in fact) used to stimulate collagen production, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Note: Peptides act as building blocks of proteins such as collagen, elastin and keratin which support your skin on key elements such as firming, soothing and hydrating the skin.
Teprenone. Teprenone is an anti-aging complex that has been lauded as targeting the signs of aging on the face, its plumping ability and training the skin to retain moisture, improving the skin's aging rate. It fights dehydration, redness and large pore size.
Beta Glucan. Beta glucans come from mushrooms, plants, algae's, yeasts, etc. They have a dual effect of being soothing and calming as well as firming and plumping. Some claim it to have a similar effect to the popular hyaluronic acids on the market. While it cannot mirror that action completely, anything that contributes to plumping in the skin is a good thing.
Bacillus Ferment. Bacillus is a natural (enzyme-based) exfoliant for the skin. It's mild but effective nature often places it as an alternative to alpha hydroxy fruit acids.
Wheat. Wheat protein delivers amino acids to the skin. Its primary use is to improve the appearance and texture of the skin. Because it contains ceramides (a special lipid that collects and retains moisture in the skin) it can prevent the skin from becoming too dry or too oily, while plumping the complexion.
Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a fluid that is found in many parts of the body -- including eyes, joints and skin. It’s a big part of why skin looks plump and youthful and it disappears as we age. While many of us may get it in the form of an injection to "replump" it also can be found in a molecule size that can penetrate the skin. Used daily it has been found to show visible improvement in skin texture and plumpness.
Kakadu plum extract. Kakadu plum extract has a high concentration of Vitamin C and soothing anti-fungal properties. While it works for all skins, it tends to do very well for those with blemish-prone skin as the fruits natural anti-oxidants work to flush out toxins.
