The Amazonian Butter That Still Works

Ingredient Spotlight · Bacuri Butter

The Amazonian Butter Cultivated Centuries Before Skincare Had a Name. And Why It Still Works.

It looks like mud. It smells like the forest. And it might be the hardest-working ingredient in your whole routine. This is the story of bacuri, and why we build formulas around it.

▶ Watch: The Story

Left: raw bacuri butter, exactly as it leaves the seed. Right: watch what it does for skin that has stopped holding on to moisture.

Deep in the Brazilian Amazon grows a tree that has never needed improving. Platonia insignis, the bacuri tree, grows up to a hundred feet tall. It flowers when the rains stop. And it drops heavy golden fruit that families have gathered from the forest floor for as long as anyone’s grandmother can remember.

People across the region love the fruit. The pulp goes into juices, ices, and sweets from Belém to São Luís. But the part we care about is the part most people threw away: the seeds.

A long time ago, people in the Amazon figured something out. Soak the seeds, simmer them slowly, and they give up a dense golden-brown butter. Folk healers used that butter on wounds, dry skin, insect bites, even sore joints. And they passed it down long before anyone thought to put the word “beauty” on a label.

Skin that stopped holding on

So what does an old rainforest butter have to do with your skin now? Here’s the thing.

After estrogen drops, your skin makes less of almost everything it uses to protect itself: less oil, fewer of the fats that hold your barrier together, less of the moisture that keeps the surface soft. The barrier itself gets thinner, and water escapes faster than your skin can replace it. That’s why dryness in this decade feels different from any dryness before it. The problem isn’t hydration. Your skin is running low on supplies.

Your skin isn’t failing. It’s under-supplied. And most moisturizers were built for skin that still makes its own lipids, so they sit on top of the problem instead of feeding it.

“Nature already had an answer for thinning, thirsty skin. The question was whether anyone would bother to put it in a jar.” How we pick ingredients at JustUs

What makes bacuri different

Bacuri butter is unusually rich in a fat called tripalmitin. It makes up more than half of the butter’s fatty acid profile, which is rare for a plant butter. The rest is mostly palmitic, oleic, and palmitoleic acids, which sound like chemistry class but are simply the same kinds of fats your own skin is made of. So when your skin can’t make enough on its own, bacuri hands it replacements it can actually use.

Two more things make this a formulator’s ingredient, not a marketing ingredient.

It melts at skin temperature. Bacuri is solid in the jar and turns liquid the moment it touches you. It also absorbs fast for something this dense. That’s part of why people in the Amazon used it every day, not just for emergencies.

It helps carry other ingredients. Drug researchers study fats like tripalmitin as delivery systems, because they help other compounds absorb and release better. In a formula, bacuri isn’t just an ingredient. It’s the truck the other ingredients ride in.

Lab studies on bacuri have found antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing activity. Most of it traces back to protective compounds in the seed called xanthones and benzophenones. Researchers keep finding what people in the Amazon already knew.

That healing reputation matters for something women ask us about all the time: scars. Bacuri is known for softening and fading them, old and new, and that’s the exact reason we made Resilience, our bacuri balm built for scarring. More on it below.

A Dermatologist’s Take
“Bacuri butter is very occlusive and helps to fortify the skin barrier and it is waterproof so it will hold in moisture. It’s also packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, so it will protect the skin from environmental damages and free radicals while outside.”

So why haven’t you heard of it?

Because bacuri is a terrible influencer.

It’s brown. It smells earthy, like the forest it comes from. It doesn’t photograph like rose petals, and it doesn’t whip up white and fluffy like shea. Sourcing it right means working with harvesters in northern Brazil who collect fallen fruit by hand.

Most brands, given the choice, pick the prettier ingredient. We picked the one that works.

What bacuri won’t do

No butter erases wrinkles. Anyone who says otherwise is selling you a story. Deep lines, lost volume, years of sun: that damage runs deeper than any cream can fully reach.

Here’s what bacuri can do, because it’s what it has always done. It puts back the fats your barrier is missing, calms skin that has turned reactive and cranky, and backs up your skin’s own repair a little more each day. For skin after menopause, that’s not a small thing. It’s the foundation everything else builds on.

“Also making old scars disappear. I put small amounts of the balm in several small containers, one by my bed, one in my car, one in my purse, so I can apply often. Considering how little you need to apply, cost is reasonable.”

“I use the entire line every single day & night and start to panic when anything runs low. I think of them as my skin food and I swear my skin is growing more radiant and younger every day. I am eternally grateful to the two brilliant women behind it.”

JustUs founders Brook and Evelyn

Made by mature women who got tired of waiting

JustUs was built by two women who lived the problem. Brook taught herself formulation because nothing on the shelf worked for her skin. Evelyn spent twenty years inside the beauty industry, watching it ignore women like us.

Our standard is simple. If an ingredient earns its place, it goes in at levels that matter, whether or not it’s photogenic. Bacuri earned its place centuries before we found it. We just refused to leave it in the forest.
